Protodiscs around Hot Magnetic Rotator Stars

چکیده
We develop equations and obtain solutions for the structure and evolution of a protodisc region that is initially formed with no radial motion and super-Keplerian rotation speed when wind material from a hot rotating star is channelled towards its equatorial plane by a dipole-type magnetic field. Its temperature is around 10K because of shock heating and the inflow of wind material causes its equatorial density to increase with time. The centrifugal force and thermal pressure increase relative to the magnetic force and material escapes at its outer edge. The protodisc region of a uniformly rotating star has almost uniform rotation and will shrink radially unless some instability intervenes. In a star with angular velocity increasing along its surface towards the equator, the angular velocity of the protodisc region decreases radially outwards and magnetorotational instability (MRI) can occur within a few hours or days. Viscosity resulting from MRI will readjust the angular velocity distribution of the protodisc material and may assist in the formation of a quasi-steady disc. Thus, the centrifugal breakout found in numerical simulations for uniformly rotating stars does not imply that quasi-steady discs with slow outflow cannot form around magnetic rotator stars with solar-type differential rotation.

Magnetic Rotator Winds and Keplerian Disks of Hot Stars
We set up equations and boundary conditions for magnetic rotator winds and disks in axially symmetric hot stars in a steady state. We establish a theorem stating that if a disk region has no meridional motion but its magnetic field has a normal component at a point Q on its shock boundary, the angular velocity of the disk region at Q is the same as the angular velocity of the star at the point ...
متن کاملSix Methods for Distinguishing Rotation and Reversal in a Stellar Magnetic Field
Periodic changes in a stellar magnetic field can be explained in two ways: the oblique rotator model or the solar cycle model. Although many papers favor the oblique rotator model, there has not been enough evidence to rule out the solar cycle model definitively. This paper presents five new observations (together with a old one) that can be carried out to distinguish magnetic field rotation an...
متن کاملObservable Effects of B fields on the Winds and Envelopes of Hot Stars
Magnetic fields on hot stars can produce a variety of interesting effects on the velocity, density, and temperature structure in the winds from the stars. The fields can produce a longitudinal dependence of the mass flux, which would lead to cyclical variability such as that seen in optical and UV spectra of many early-type stars. The fields can channel and spin-up the outflow, which appears to...
متن کاملCoherence of Burst Oscillations and Accretion-powered Pulsations in the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar Xte J1814-338
X-ray timing of the accretion-powered pulsations during the 2003 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 has revealed variation in the pulse time of arrival residuals. These can be interpreted in several ways, including spin-down and wandering of the fuel impact point around the magnetic pole. In this Letter we show that the burst oscillations of this source are coherent with...
متن کاملThe Turn-over Scenario for White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars
We study numerically the so-called “turn-over scenario” for rotating magnetic white dwarfs and neutron stars. According to this scenario, the magnetic symmetry axis of the model inclines at a gradually increasing angle (the so-called “turn-over angle”) relative to the invariant angular momentum axis. Consequently, the model becomes “perpendicular rotator” (i.e., its turn-over angle becomes almo...
